post 3

I grew up mostly around grandparents, great aunts, and uncles etc..... needless to say the people i grew up around were much older people. When i was growing up, i noticed that the women in my family tended to stay home and take care of the house and the kids, while the men went out to work alot of hours to support their family. Usually the only time where you see the women working was when the men were a bit older and mostly had medical problems to the point where they couldn't work anymore.

Since being and living on my own, my own personal feelings have changed because i believe that if a man and a woman decide to be together and raise a family, they should take care of that responsibility 50/50 in all aspects. It doesn't take one person to make a family, so it shouldn't be one sided when taking care of it.

One of the communities that i belong to is my community of my race. I am a very proud Puerto Rican. Some of the things that give status in my community is knowing ones heratige. The more you know the more respect you have. Language is also a very important part because it is said that a puerto rican who does not speak spanish can not be respected as a puerto rican. I think this suggest that we value our culture very carefully and closely. We are very careful about the people we let into our lives and influence us.

I also have these beliefs because of the fact that i dont like it when someone claims that they are from a certaian ethnicity and know nothing about their heratige or where they really came from. Most people i know dont even know their own ;language and to me that is a dis respect to your people. I am very proud of where i am in my community, and try and stick to my heratige as much as possible.

I just hope that my daughter wont understand this fully before I do (she's 2), but with the way the world is now in days she just might.....
